Freeview Plus

The Freeview consortium, which represents Australia's free-to-air commercial TV networks, is working with television makers to oversee the HbbTV rollout, with Nine and Ten confirming their HbbTV plans. HbbTV-compatible TVs, set-top boxes and personal video recorders are expected to go on sale in Australia next year.  The new features are unlikely to be backwards-compatible with existing televisions, Freeview general manager Liz Ross says.

Already established in Europe, HbbTV is an open platform but Freeview is ''not ready to talk about specific plans'' for Australia, Ross says.  Television makers do not need a licensing agreement ''at this stage'' to introduce HbbTV features - in contrast with Freeview's electronic program guide (EPG), which is a closed platform limited to a handful of Freeview-endorsed devices.
